The Catholic Nation under Liberalism. Perspectives on Religious Unity in Liberal Spain, 1808-1868

2015

The Construct of Sexual Openness for Females in Steady Intimate Relationships

2017

The analysis of open-minded attitudes towards sexuality in general requires a construct based on attitudinal dimensions. Although several existing studies involve sexual attitudes, they differ substantially and standardized conceptual work is missing. Thus, the authors introduce the latent variable sexual openness to develop a construct based on self-oriented attitudes towards different sexual topics. Available survey data of female German students in a steady relationship allowed providing a first empirical test for the applicability of this construct. Five subdimensions are acknowledged central for sexual openness: sexual practices, masturbation, bisexuality, permissiveness, and pornograp…

Teorie della coercizione, antipaternalismo e autonomia contrattuale

2013

In this article, I will examine the relations between antipaternalism and coercion theories. According to antipaternalism over himself, over his body and mind, the individual is sovereign, but if his actions are rational and free of coercion. Secondly, I will clarify if the so called unconscionability doctrine about contract law is antipaternalistic or not.

Riformismo e liberalismo in Augustin Cochin (1823-1872).

2007

Crossing Borders. Concepts and Practices for a New Planetary Dimension

2020

The essay takes into account some categories and practices of colonial relations by considering both domination and subjectification processes and handles the concept of border and the complex dynamics of crossing, mobility, diaspora, and hybridization. The critical analysis of the hierarchical order of the world highlights the ways in which the relations between non-homogeneous elements produce conflict and assimilation practices, but also contaminations and inclusion. By assuming the "colonial" as a precarious concept, the essay stresses the discursive aspects of dominion but also the government, counter-conducts, and resistances, without forecloses the persistence of the epistemological …

Cambiamento climatico, liberalismo, e la distinzione pubblico-privato

2020

Jahrhunderts

1982

The essay examines the natural law economics of the eighteenth century and the evolutionist economics of the nineteenth century by focusing on their methods for achieving a common, nebulously articulated goal: individual fulfillment and the happiness and welfare of mankind in a free, harmoniously ordered society. Illustrating the theoretical and, in practice, effective theories derived from natural law are cammeralism, the economic philosophy of the Physiocrats, and economic liberalism. It is emphasized that these theories do not represent a linear sequence of ideas in which one set of ideas „triumphed” over a preceding one. They show instead three different consequences reflecting the inte…

10. Political liberalism and the preventive containment of unreasonable beliefs and behavior

2015

This paper examines the ways in which illiberal and unreasonable views can be legitimately contained in a politically liberal society, and discusses some of the pressing reasons to undertake, or abstain from, such measures. Theoretical background for the discussion is provided by Rawlsian political liberalism. The paper focuses on the particular justification for the preventive containment of unreasonable views offered by Jonathan Quong (2011). It is claimed that Quong’s approach raises some significant worries (not unrelated to the ‘third-order pathologies’ discussed above in Chapter 2). The suggestion is put forward that political liberals would do well to pay more attention to respect an…

Challenging the Rule of Political Liberalism

2020

Abstract The origin of the ongoing conflict between the EU and Poland may, according to the author, partly be subscribed to the EU-institutions conceptualization of the rule of law. This conceptualization, which in the article is referred to as “the rule of political liberalism”, establishes a particular set of legal institutional and substantial frames and limits for national democratic politics. Granted that the rule of law is an inherently contested concept, the author deconstructs the rule of political liberalism, reveals its weaknesses and ideological bias and proposes an alternative understanding of the rule of law. “The rule of pragmatism” is based on a pragmatic conceptualization of…
